The definite treatment for watery diarrhea, hypokalemia and
achlorhydria syndrome is removal of the tumor, if possible.
Calcium absorption and
achlorhydria. N Engl J Med 1985;313(2):70-3.
(54) These tumors are characterized by the secretion of vasoactive intestinal peptide, which produces the Verner-Morrison syndrome (watery diarrhea, hypokalemia,
achlorhydria).
It is interesting to note that Rhodes (1976) describes a patient suffering from
achlorhydria. After ingestion of enteric coated PO the patient complained of heartburn and eructation; investigations demonstrated that the capsule disintegrated in the stomach due to the high pH.
(4)The conditions that define the high-risk groups include alcoholism, liver disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, steroid dependency, AIDS, chronic intestinal disease,
achlorhydria, and hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis.
Functional PanNETs (F-PanNETs) comprehend insulinomas (35-40% of F-PanNETs) manifesting with the classical Whipple's triad (fasting hypoglycemia, symptoms of hypoglycemia, and immediate relief of symptoms after the administration of glucose) [12], gastrinomas (16-30%) with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (multiple peptic ulcers, esophageal reflux, and diarrhea), glucagonomas (<10%) with the "4D syndrome" (dermatitis, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, and depression), and VIPomas (<10%) related to the Verner-Morrison syndrome (watery diarrhea,
achlorhydria, and hypokalemia).
Misleading alkaline pH in the stomach can be seen in case of
achlorhydria and with the use of potent anti-acid drugs.
Other common underlying conditions are atherosclerosis, diabetes, collagen diseases, liver cirrhosis, and
achlorhydria. Our patient was not found to have any of those predisposing factors.

Achlorhydria: Its Possible Mechanism of Action Upon the Central Nervous System and Parietal Cell-Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent K+/H+ Pump, by Jonathan E.
More than 80% of patients with septicemia have one or more chronic medical conditions, including kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, hematologic disorders,
achlorhydria, or most commonly, liver disease due to alcohol or hepatitis C virus infection.
H pylori impairs the normal secretion of hydrochloric acid, provoking
achlorhydria in infected patients3.
