Briefly, 20 g of homogenised inner core soil was suspended in
acetonitrile (25 mL) and shaken for 1 h before being allowed to settle.
At the beginning, methanol was investigated as an organic solvent, instead of
acetonitrile. Better peak shape and shorter retention time were achieved using
acetonitrile.
Reagent grade nitrate salts of silver, cadmium, zinc, chrome, cobalt, mercury, copper, manganese, nickel, iron, Lead and dried
acetonitrile ([H.sub.2]O < 0.005%) (All from Merck) were of the highest purity available and used as received.
