MS usually lacks
Verocay bodies, microcysts, a well-formed capsule, and thick-walled hyalinized blood vessels.
Antoni A areas are cellular with nuclear palisading and
Verocay bodies where two rows of palisading nuclei are separated by pink fibrillary material.
[17,24] Highly cellular composed of spindle cells, which form palisade and produce
Verocay bodies are called Antoni type A area.
GI schwannomas are capsulated tumors consisting of spindle cells with prominent lymphoid aggregations which are characterized by Antoni A and Antoni B areas, and the absence of typical
Verocay bodies [33, 34].
Caption: Figure 3: Histopathological examination revealing the presence of
Verocay bodies with characteristic hypocelluar areas (Antoni A) with intermittent hypercellular areas (Antoni B) confirming the diagnosis of schwannoma.
Microscopically (Figure 11), spindle-shaped cells in Antoni-A and Antoni-B arrangement interspersed with
Verocay bodies are the characteristic features [2].
Neurofibromas do not display
verocay bodies, Antoni A and B areas, nuclear palisading, or hyalinized thickening of vessels present in schwannomas.
The Antoni A pattern is characterized by long spindle cells that create a palisading pattern, and when well developed, this palisading feature can create the so-called "
Verocay bodies" [2].
The histopathological pattern formed by the palisading or alternating bands of epithelial cells and stroma similar to
Verocay bodies is called "rippled pattern" (2).
Histopathologically gastrointestinal schwannoma are spindle shaped cells with a prominent lymphocytic cuff and are characterized by the absence of typical
Verocay bodies, Antoni A and Antoni B areas10.
Scattered prominent
Verocay bodies were also identified (Fig 5).
