Relationship between [sup]13C
urea breath test and liver function
This was done by using the monoclonal H pylori fecal antigen assay (CerTest HpSA kit, Biotec(r), Spain) was used for stool antigen detection as per the manufacturer instructions, which has a sensitivity of 94% and specificity of 100% and is an effective alternative to
urea breath test)19 and serological test for presence of IgM antibodies (acute infection).
In five patients
urea breath tests were performed postoperatively for Helicobacter Pylori and the results were positive.
Helicobacter pylori positivity was found to be 35 (35%) in histopathological evaluation, and 36 (36%) in the C14
urea breath test. Of the 35 patients, 32 (91.4%) were found to be positive by the C14
urea breath test also.
The second is called the stool antigen test and is almost as reliable as the
urea breath test.

urea breath test. J Clin Gastroenterol 1999;28:238-40.
Based on the same principle as the
urea breath test, rapid urease tests detect the presence of bacterial urease in gastric mucosal biopsies.[13] Each of the 3 commercially available kits (CLOtest, Ballard Medical Products, Draper, UT; Hpfast, GI Supply, Camp Hill, PA; and PyloriTek, Serim Research Corp., Elkhart, IN) contains urea and a pH-sensitive marker.
Indirect methods for diagnosis include
urea breath tests and serology.
One of them, 13C-
urea breath test despite high sensivity and specificity has a relatively high cost and requires trained staff and well equipped laboratory instruments.
Higher results in our study could have been achieved if we had used fecal antigen test or
urea breath test.
pylori infection proven by at least two positive results for the urea test, histology, and
urea breath test.
