St John's neuromuscular therapy

St John’s neuromuscular therapy

A system of bodywork used to treat soft tissue injury, pain and dysfunction, developed in the 1970s by P St John, a former solid waste engineer. The technique is physical therapy-oriented, relies on rehabilitation techniques, and addresses biomechanics, ischaemia, trigger points, nerve entrapment and compression and postural distortion. St John’s neuromuscular therapy is intended to achieve a balance between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, and relieve pain and dysfunction; it is believed to be useful in treating most musculoskeletal pain, including back, neck and shoulder pain, post-traumatic pain, headaches, migraines, whiplash-related pain and pain related to poor posture.
