In what follows, I unpack the history of the afternoon soap opera supercouples of the 1980s, situating their rise to popularity and their romantic adventures in two key contexts of the period leading up to and including their reign: first, changes in the television industry, particularly an interest in attracting a broader audience to soap opera and, second, changes in American society, particularly its negotiations over gender in relation to both feminism and its detractors.
As a consequence, the story resulted in a monotonous account of Sor Juana with no possibility to tell a story with the elements of a soap opera: passion, love, complications, intrigue, antagonism, and mystery.
If it is true that more than 20 percent of the soap opera audience can now be described demographically as young college men between the ages of 18 and 34, researchers should be interested in knowing: (1) Why men watch TV soap operas, particularly when research shows that this genre was created and designed for women; (2) what factor(s) might explain why men are now watching daytime television; and (3) are advertisers placing advertisements for mass-consumed products during daytime programming in order to reach this fraction of the viewing audience?
