The Swedish trial in old patients with hypertension (STOP-Hypertension) |8~, investigating the benefit of intervention with hydrochlorothiazide (plus beta-blocker if necessary) versus placebo in 70-84-year-old subjects with diastolic hypertension, demonstrated impressive reductions in stroke (43% incidence, 73% fatal) and fatal MI (50%), together with a hitherto unrivalled reduction in overall mortality of 43% over a 5-year period.
