Melanism was completed by the age of two years (based on counting carapace
scute annuli) in all known subadult specimens, leaving an almost completely black animal.

The absence of three discontinuous keels on the carapace, well-developed growth rings, and a well-developed posterior notch in the cervical
scute confirms that the taxon from Boutersem does not belong to that form.
Only a few of the
scutes remained in place and the turtle had obviously been dead for several months or longer.
No significant correlations existed between
scute or claw Hg levels and those of internal tissues.
An affected tortoise was defined as having at least 1.0 m[m.sup.2] of flaking or chipping of at least one
