a potential space between the lamina propria and the external elastic lamina of the vocal fold. Edema in this space produces hoarseness in chronic inflammation.

ENT/surgical anatomy A potential space located between the internal elastic lamina of the thyroarytenoid–vocalis muscle and the external elastic lamina; RS is limited on the superior surface of the true vocal cord–TVC by superior linea arcuata, and extends from the vocal process of the arytenoid muscle to the anterior limit of the TVC; in the presence of lesions of the TVC–eg, phonotrauma, the RS fills with fluid
