This blood supply is derived from the two major branches of the brachial artery that contribute to the collateral circulation around the capitellum: the profunda brachii and the radial collateral artery.
Anomalous origin of the deep brachial artery (profunda brachii) observed in bilateral arms: case report.
One is the superior thoracic artery and the other is a large branch which is termed as common subscapular trunk from which circumflex scapular artery, anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries, profunda brachii artery, ulnar collateral artery and thoracodorsal artery branched.
The PHCA can anastomose with the deltoid branch of profunda brachii artery (ramus deltoideus arteriae profundae brachii), the largest branch from the BA, given off not far from the arbitrary beginning of the BA (at the level of the distal margin of the artery passing under the tendon of the latissimus dorsi muscle teres major) in the very proximal arm.
It was horrifying to note in our study that 64.2% were not sure about the correct place of injection in the deltoid muscle, 48.3% did not know the correct site for IMI in the gluteal muscle and an astounding 87.6% were injecting into the wrong muscle in the thigh, 26.9% of our test subjects stated that triceps can be used as a site for IMI which is not recommended as a very favored site for IMI in the literature because of fear of damage to the radial and profunda brachii artery which lie under the triceps muscle.
At the level of the radial groove, the profunda brachii artery and its venae comitantes were seen to accompany the nerve.
However the profunda brachii and the anterior circumflex humeral arteries do not arise from the deep branch but arise from the normal axillary artery itself (picture 3).
A case reported by Venieratos & Lolis (2001) shows common subscapular trunk gave origin to circumflex scapular, thoracodorsal, anterior and posterior circumflex humeral, profunda brachii and ulnar collateral arteries.
To begin with it was lying posterior to the Brachial artery, Then it left the Brachial artery by entering the radial groove on the back of the arm(humerus)along with the Profunda brachii vessel arising from the Brachial artery.
From the third part of the axillary artery a rare case of unusual origin of subscapular, anterior and posterior circumflex humeral, profunda brachii artery and ulnar collateral arteries from a common trunk were found on the left side during routine dissection.
Apart from the terminal branches, the branches of the brachial artery in the arm are profunda brachii, superior ulnar collateral artery, inferior ulnar collateral artery, muscular branches to the surrounding muscles and a nutrient branch to the humerus [1].
The profunda brachii artery was given off by the brachial artery II, while at the level of intercondylar line, the ulnar artery was given off by brachial artery I.
