Potato Chip Operation

A popular term for multiple, increasingly proximal, partial amputations of the lower extremities required in the face of dry gangrene due to atherosclerotic occlusion, most often seen in elderly diabetics; since patients are often disinclined to consent at first to a full above the knee amputation (AKA), the definitive therapy for severe ischemia of the legs, the surgeon amputates in sequence, one or more toe(s), mid-foot, foot, lower—below-the-knee amputation—and finally part of the leg above the knee
