Dr Emyr Owen told the inquest his post-mortem examination revealed coronary and respiratory failure brought on by the ingestion of
potassium cyanide.
The poison
potassium cyanide prevents the extraction of oxygen from blood into tissue.
"If algae in drinking water are exposed to a poison such as
potassium cyanide, methyl parathion, or the herbicides Diuron or Paraquat, the algae become unhealthy," said Greenbaum.

Drabkin cyanide-ferricyanide solution, pH 7.0-7.4, was prepared by dissolving potassium ferricyanide (200 mg),
potassium cyanide (50 mg), and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (140 mg) in distilled water, making the volume up to 1 liter, and mixing after the addition of 0.5 mL of 250 g/L Brij 35.
Hydrogen cyanide, sodium cyanide, and
potassium cyanide are the forms of cyanide most likely to be in the environment as a result of industrial activities.
After trial and error, a set of standards visually representative of slight (50 mg/dl), moderate (100 mg/dl), and gross (200 mg/dl) hemolysis was formulated by adding known amounts of hemoglobin to Drabbins solution (sodium bicarbonate,
potassium cyanide, and potassium ferri-cyanide).
She was found dead the next morning, and the medical examiner ascertained that she had died as a result of ingesting a lethal dose of
potassium cyanide. The case was ruled a homicide, and the FBI investigated--never solving the crime.
