We selected anatomical ROIs in bilateral frontal areas: inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) pars opercularis (Operc), pars triangularis (Tri), and pars orbitalis (Orb); precentral gyrus (PreC), insula, and supplementary motor area (SMA).
Traditionally, it has been accepted that speech production is controlled by the so-called Broca's area corresponding to Brodmann's area (BA) 44 (pars opercularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus) (e.g., Goldstein, 1948; Damasio & Geschwind, 1984; Head, 1926; Hecaen, 1972; Luria, 1947/1970).
The researchers found that an area of the brain known as the left pars opercularis - part of the Broca's area, a region of the brain involved in speech production but also in analysing and separating speech sounds - correlated with the amount of training in transcription that a phonetician had undergone.

Time-frequency analyses showed a left-lateralized inferior frontal gyrus (pars opercularis) response to words between 100-250 ms in the beta frequency band that was significantly stronger than the response to consonant strings or faces.
For participants with right hemisphere stroke, LI values were as follows: inferior frontal gyrus pars opercularis (LI = 0.33, SEM = 0.17), pars triangularis (LI = 0.16, SEM = 0.19), precentral gyrus (LI = 0.22, SEM = 0.09), and supramarginal gyrus (LI = 0.40, SE M = 0.08).
