National Health Service Corps

A US government-sponsored body which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, division of Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Clinician Recruitment and Service, which provides scholarships and loan repayment (up to $50,000 every 2 years) for service in areas needing primary care physicians.

The National Health Service Corps was founded in 1972 to address a primary care shortage.
It will increase recognition of advanced nurses as primary care providers, create a new grant program for nurse-managed health clinics, and among other things, it increases funding for the National Health Service Corps. I will continue to support legislation that gives nurses the tools they need and empowers this important workforce."
For example, a recent exciting notice from the National Health Service Corps describes a new loan repayment program for part-time clinicians (applications are due May 25) and the 2010 scholarship program for careers in primary care (applications due June 1).
Other provisions include creating nurse managed clinics in primary care shortage areas, a demonstration provision for graduate nurse education which will allow Graduate Medical Education monies to be directed to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses education, monies for school based health centers, nurse-family home visit partnerships, creation of a national healthcare workforce commission, and increased funding for national health service corps.
With medical school paid for by the National Health Service Corps, Benjamin began a solo practice in Bayou La Batre.
However, Congress has created two exceptions to this rule: loan forgiveness for public service and payments under the National Health Service Corps loan repayment program.
The relief provided by these programs ranges from a modest debt forgiveness of $4,725 for a year of service in AmeriCorps or VISTA to a very generous loan repayment of up to $35,000 a year for service in the National Health Service Corps. These programs are summarized in the exhibit on p.
