Investigating the
nasal cycle using endoscopy, rhinoresistometry and acoustic rhinometry.
A model for the central control of airflow patterns within the human
nasal cycle. J Laryngol Otol 2016; 130 (1): 82-8.
A differential diagnosis of reversible nasal congestion includes allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, exaggerated
nasal cycle, acute viral rhinitis, acute viral rhinosinusitis, acute bacterial rhinitis, acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, chronic inflammatory or infectious rhinosinusitis, rhinitis medicamentosa, sarcoidosis, Wegener's granulomatosis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, and rhinoscleroma [20].
To reduce bias by the
nasal cycle, rhinomanometry and imaging were performed during the same cycle pre-and postoperatively.
They shift their workload back and forth in the
nasal cycle. At any moment, most of the air you inhale travels through just one nostril, while a much smaller amount enters through the other.
Periodic nasal congestion and decongestion have been termed the "
nasal cycle" by Heetderks [9].
(2,3) These patients have previously served as subjects of studies of changes in the nasal mucosa structure, (2) the
nasal cycle, (3-5( blood flow, (6) and mucociliary transport.
Detection of the
nasal cycle with acoustic rhinometry: Techniques and applications, Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1999;120:238-47.
For a proper and efficient
nasal cycle, the turbinates need a rigid septum to be their reference point.
To decrease the effects of the
nasal cycle, our subjects were measured at approximately the same time of day at both testing sessions.
The most common structural abnormality is a deviated nasal septum, which can cause a sensation of chronic unilateral nasal congestion or congestion that fluctuates with the
nasal cycle. The patient might report a history of nasal trauma.
