National Vocational Qualification

A general term for work-related, competency-based qualifications which are intended to reflect the skill set needed for effective job performance. NVQs represent national standards recognised by employers in the UK and have been divided into 5 levels, from Level 1—competence to apply knowledge in performing routine and predictable tasks—to Level 5—competence to apply fundamental principles across broad and often unpredictable situations, for which there is substantial personal autonomy and often significant responsibility for the work of others, allocating substantial resources, personal accountability for analysis, diagnosis, design, planning, execution and assessment.
