Mr Craig said it was normal for even the smallest institutions abroad to have in-house
microfilming units.
"Compared to storing the originals in some big building," he writes, "
microfilming is (like digitization) wildly expensive...it costs over a hundred and fifty dollars per volume...versus less than five dollars a volume to build outlying storage."
However there is still a large interest in 35mm conventional
microfilming."
Microfilming activity decreased by about 11,000 volumes, to 154,857; the high
microfilming values over the last three years was due largely to a re-organization of counting at the Library of Congress, which reported 121,386 volumes microfilmed.
Fire and police units have often joined to form public safety, services; records management programs and information technology (IT) departments have sometimes allied; and department heads or other officials frequently have pooled their efforts to furnish joint services such as
microfilming, imaging, and computer indexing.
Timothy Baker, Acting State Archivist for the Maryland State Archives, is responsible for a department that has been
microfilming and scanning for decades.
It describes the present and historical collections and efforts to preserve them through
microfilming and digitizing processes.
"The more pages a publisher has online, the more royalties can be gained, said Mr Baker, and continued, "There are further services available too, which protect and conserve newspaper data using a mix of scanning,
microfilming and online storage."
