A diagnostic tool to detect heart attacks using a person's saliva is being tested at the
Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine and researchers at Rice University's BioScience Research Collaborative.
Turner Technical Arts High School in Miami and
Michael E. DeBakey High School for the Health Professions in Houston, hands-on experience and high academic standards have combined to create such challenging, award-winning programs.
Participating institutions were the
Michael E. DeBakey (Houston) VA Medical Center; Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (Houston); and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) Medical Center, Department of Anesthesia (Plattsburgh, N.Y.).
Sally Holmes, the group discussed the needs of the
Michael E. DeBakey (MED) Spinal Cord Injury Unit and discovered its televisions needed replacing.

Michael E. DeBakey Awards for excellence in journalism on the issue of animal research (see "Debakey Journalism Awards," above).
