Leishman-Donovan bodies

The form in which Leishmania parasites appear in MACROPHAGE cells in LEISHMANIASIS. They appear as oval, nucleated, non-flagellated structures in the CYTOPLASM of the MACROPHAGES. Also known as amastigotes . (Major-General Sir William Boog Leishman, 1865–1926, English Army pathologist, and Lt Col Charles Donovan, 1863–1951, Irish physician).

However, after retrospective review of these sections, Leishman-Donovan bodies were detected in 3 of them.
Infected macrophages measure 20-30 m across whereas amastigotes (known as Leishman-Donovan bodies) are round to oval structures measuring only 2-5m.
Granuloma formation may result from simple lipids in some cases (cholesterol granuloma).13 Apart from infectious agents such as Leishman-Donovan bodies and fungi, dead hair and myriad of foreign bodies may result in granuloma formation.
