house physician

A physician who 'covers' the medical needs of Pts in a hospital; an HP may not be board-certified, but usually has a number of yrs of formal training–ie, residency in clinical medicine in a teaching hospital, and works in a secondary care facility, usually carrying out the dictates of the Pt's 'private' physician.
