Halsted's radical mastectomy

A mutilating surgical operation for breast cancer involving total removal of the breast and the underlying muscles, the fat under the skin, the lymph nodes in the arm pit (axilla) and a wide area of skin. This kind of radical surgery is now rarely performed. (William Stewart Halsted, 1852–1922, American surgeon)
