H-2 receptor antagonist
H-2 receptor antagonist
One of a range of drugs that block the action of HISTAMINE on RECEPTORS, mainly in the stomach, that are concerned with the secretion of acid. The most important of these drugs are CIMETIDINE (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid) and RANITIDINE (Zantac). Although these drugs are ANTIHISTAMINES, this term is normally restricted to blockers of the H-1 receptors in the blood vessels.Collins Dictionary of Medicine © Robert M. Youngson 2004, 2005
