While gene transfer from a trematode could benefit the lake sturgeon, the Trichomonas pathogen is more likely to have a negative effect.
Lauren McDaniel, said the gene transfer mechanism has been observed in lab settings for decades, but until now scientists had not documented that it also exists in nature and that it plays an important role in helping bacteria adapt.
"While lateral gene transfer from a trematode worm could ultimately benefit the lake sturgeon, evidence of the Trichomonas pathogen is more likely to have a negative effect."

(Ibaraki, Japan) has patented a method for highly efficient gene transfer into primate-derived embryonic stem (ES) cells has successfully been achieved by using a simian immunodeficiency virus vector (SIV) pseudotyped with VSV-G protein, which is a surface glycoprotein of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) The present invention provides simian immunodeficiency virus vectors for gene transfer to primate ES cells.
ARGs are rapidly spread by horizontal gene transfer among bacteria.
This exchange of genetic material, called horizontal gene transfer, passes genes that encode the enzymes necessary for the metabolism of compounds from a donor bacterium to a recipient bacterium with a different genetic background.
In the paper, "hMaxi-K Gene Transfer in Males with Erectile Dysfunction: Results of the First Human Trial," the authors describe the trial in which 11 patients received a single injection of different doses of hMaxi-K, a gene therapy formulation containing the human gene hSlo packaged in a "naked" DNA plasmid delivery vector.
