Recently, utilization of water-soluble contrast agents mainly
gastrografin has become more popular for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ASBO (6).
Barium enema with
gastrografin can reveal MM or SIT, when there are difficulties in making the diagnosis of acute left lower quadrant pain.
Postoperative leakage at the level of EJS was determined with a
gastrografin contrast study, while stricture of the EJS was outlined after 12 months on an upper GI endoscopy, and was treated with a ballon dilatation.
Gastrografin study followed by barium swallow showed no obvious extravasation of contrast [Figure 4].
Gastrografin enema reveals narrowing of the obstruction, which creates a pathognomonic appearance of a bird's beak sign (4).
All the cases were diagnosed by history, clinical examination, routine haematological investigations, serum electrolytes, x-ray of abdomen in erect and supine posture and ultrasonography of abdomen followed by
Gastrografin contrast study.
Roadley et al., "Randomized controlled trial of
gastrografin in adhesive small bowel obstruction," ANZ Journal of Surgery, vol.
The contrast used was
Gastrografin, an iodinated radiopaque contrast medium for oral or rectal administration.
Oral contrast agent administration in cases of suspected MBO is controversial, and the use of iodinated contrast medium (
gastrografin) is preferred over barium as it is absorbable and provides similar radiological definition [52].
To further confirm the diagnosis of esophageal rupture, a limited
Gastrografin swallow was done through the preexisting NG tube while it was pulled back into the distal esophagus.
When X-ray is indeterminate and the correct diagnosis cannot be made,
gastrografin enema is desirable to detect bowel distention.
The patient underwent a small bowel follow through with
gastrografin, which demonstrated no abnormalities.
