A gene on chromosome 12q13.2 that encodes a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family and the TGF-beta superfamily, which regulate cell growth and differentiation in embryonic and adult tissues. GDF11 is thought to play a role in mesodermal formation and neurogenesis during embryonic development.
