A gene on chromosome 19p12 that encodes a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which regulates cell growth and differentiation in both embryonic and adult bone and cartilage. Rodent data suggest that GDF1 is involved in establishing left-right asymmetry in early embryogenesis and in neural development in later embryogenesis.
