The implementation of
Employment Equity (EE) programs in Canadian institutions, including universities, was intended to combat discrimination against designated groups (women, aboriginals, visible minorities, and persons with disabilities).
They also set an
employment equity goal of 50-50 representation in their management profile.
Universities also have administrative services dealing with
Employment Equity and/or Human Rights complaints, and are charged with enforcing discrimination and harassment legislation and policies for all employee groups and students.
This awareness of power imbalances attendant to gendered and raced discriminations in the society and workplace likely contributes to their support for
employment equity and antiracism education.
In July 2002, the government put out a Ministry of Women's Affairs discussion document Next Steps Towards
Employment Equity and established a Taskforce on Pay and
Employment Equity in the Public Service, Health and Education, chaired by Diana Crossan.
Removal of barriers and increasing social inclusion is central to the federal
Employment Equity Act, at least as it has been implemented in more recent years.
