A randomized controlled trial of peeling and aspiration of
Elschnig pearls and neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser capsulotomy.
They are commonly termed as
Elschnig pearls. This causes significant visual loss.
Based on slit lamp examination PCOs were divided into three groups of fibrosis, Elschnig pearls and wrinkling.
The types of PCO were fibrosis in 67.8% eyes, Elschnig pearls in 20.4% eyes and wrinkling in 11.8% eyes.
Twenty nine (58%) eyes had capsular fibrosis, 14(28%) had Elschnig pearls, 6(12%) had both capsular fibrosis and Elschnig pearls and one (2%) eye had capsular wrinkling.
Patients having posterior capsular opacification with either capsular fibrosis and/ or Elschnig pearls or capsular wrinkling seen on slit lamp examination before and after pupillary dilatation, those having aphakic or pseudophakic eyes were included in the study.
Twenty nine (58%) eyes had capsular fibrosis, 14(28%) had Elschnig pearls, six (12%) had both capsular fibrosis and Elschnig pearls and one eye had capsular wrinkling.
The main reason for development of PCO is transformation of residual lens epithelial cells from the equatorial region of the capsular bag into Elschnig pearls and fibroblasts6.
Elschnig pearl formation along Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy margin, long term follow up.
The capsule behind the optic was evaluated within a central area measuring 3 mm diameter with distinction being given to grading of Elschnig pearls and fibrosis.
Effect of a plano-convex posterior chamber lens on capsular opacification from Elschnig pearl formation.
