Colombia es un pais megadiverso con una representacion parcial de 70 generos y 247 especies de serpientes, de las cuales 47 son venenosas y estan incluidas en dos familias, la Viperidae y la Elapidae, con siete y cuatro generos respectivamente, siendo las serpientes pertenecientes a la familia Viperidae las de mayor interes epidemiologico debido a que son las causantes del 90-95 % de los casos de accidentes ofidicos en Colombia tanto en humanos como en animales (8,10,19).
Finalmente, los reptiles representan el grupo con menor incidencia de atropellos, con 58 registros correspondientes unicamente a serpientes; se identificaron 9 especies, pertenecientes a las familias Colubridae, Viperidae y Elapidae. Oxybelis aeneus fue la especie encontrada con mayor frecuencia (29,3%) (Figura 2d).
Among the Elapidae, bites by Naja naja and Naja kaouthia can cause significant local swelling and sometimes extensive tissue necrosis of the bitten limb, whereas bites by kraits or sea snakes do not usually cause signs of local envenoming and can be virtually painless.
