A polymerase that acts on a template DNA strand to produce RNA, resulting in the formation of an RNA primer needed in RNA replication.

primase

an ENZYME that synthesizes RNA PRIMERS during DNA replication in bacteria and certain single-stranded DNA phages. The RNA primers can then be extended by DNA POLYMERASE (see DNA (b) REPLICATION).
