Chinese medicine
An annual herb, the seeds of which contain essential oils, including borneol, camphene, pinene and terpineol, and is antiseptic, astringent and a stimulant. It is used topically for abscesses, eczema, itching and oozing skin lesions, ringworm, and scabies; as a douche for vaginal discharge and yeast infection; and internally for male impotence and female infertility.

The traditional Chinese medicine osthole (7-methoxy-8(3-methyl-2-butenyl)- coumarin) is a naturally occurring coumarin derivative, which can be derived from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson, Angelica archangelica L., and imperatorin [6].

Our previous studies found that osthol, an active constituent isolated from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson (Apiaceae), could ameliorate the accumulation of lipids and decrease the lipid levels in serum and hepatic tissue in alcohol-induced fatty liver mice and rats.
