In Chesapeake Bay, medusae of the scyphozoan
Chrysaora quinquecirrha are unusual in tolerating salinities as low as 5 [per thousands]; the scyphistomae (polyps) are not found where salinities are less than 7 [per thousands] and thrive at 10 [per thousands] to 25 [per thousands] (Cargo and Schultz, 1966, 1967).
Although Mangum et aL (1972) observed similarly high [Q.sub.10] values of oxygen consumption rates and bell pulsation rates for nonacclimated polyps of Aurelia aurita and
Chrysaora quinquecirrha, they observed lower values of [Q.sub.10] in medusae of Cyanea capillata acclimated for 3 days at each temperature.
