All subjects developing a 20% fall in [FEV.sub.1] were given 1 mg of inhaled terbutaline (Bricanyl, Astra Pharmaceuticals, Kings Langley, UK) via a metered-dose inhaler and spacer device (Nebuhaler, Astra Pharmaceuticals) and remained within the department until [FEV.sub.1] increased to within 10% of baseline.
Oral Metaproterenol (Metaprel) Terbutaline (Brethine, Bricanyl) These agents form the basis of therapy in acute attacks since they are extremely effective bronchodilators.
Examples are albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), ephedrine, isoetherine (Bronkosol), isoproterenol (Isuprel), metaproterenol (Alupent, Metaprel) and terbutaline (Brethine, Bricanyl).
They take the form of an inhaler and may contain drugs such as Salbutamol - for example, Ventolin - and Terbutaline (Bricanyl).
The preventers (normally inhaled steroids such as Becotide or Pulmicort) work by treating the underlying cause of asthma, while relievers (such as Ventolin and Bricanyl) provide temporary relief by opening up the airways of the lungs.
