A growth medium used in microbiology labs to isolate Bordetella pertussis and B parapertussis.

Frozen bacteria were cultured onto Bordet-Gengou Agar (BGA) (Becton Dickinson, USA) supplemented with 1% glycerol, peptone, and 20% defibrinated sheep blood and were incubated at 35[degrees]C for 72 hr.

A special culture medium that contains activated charcoal (e.g., Regan-Lowe agar) or potato-derived starch (i.e., Bordet-Gengou agar) and defibrinated horse of sheep blood to neutralize the inhibitory substances must be used to isolate B.
