Ophthalmology A darkened stellate pattern seen on retinal fundoscopy in stage III proliferative retinopathy in patients with sickling haemoglobinopathies: sickle cell-hemoglobin C (SC) retinopathy, caused by retinal pigment epithelial hyperplasia due to the high rate of glycolysis in the end arteriolar system, which develop after intra- and subneural retinal haemorrhage, more commonly in haemoglobin SS disease than in SC disease
