1. Light produced by certain organisms from the oxidation of luciferins through the action of luciferases and with negligible production of heat, chemical energy being converted directly into light energy. Synonym(s): cold light (1)

bioluminescence

the production of light of various wavelengths by living organisms (often wrongly termed phosphorescence). The phenomenon is found in such divergent groups as bacteria, fungi, fireflies (COLEOPTERA) and various marine organisms. See LUMINESCENCE.
