biglycan

A small leucine-rich repeat (LRR) proteoglycan encoded by BGN on chromosome Xq28, which plays a role in assembly of collagen fibrils and muscle regeneration. It interacts with alpha-dystroglycan, alpha- and gamma-sarcoglycan and collagen VI, and it is critical for the assembly of the dystrophin-associated protein complex.

Accordingly, in our other project, which is currently underway, our aim is to examine target genes such as ChSy-1 and C4ST-1, enzymes responsible for the synthesis and elongation of the glycosaminoglycan chain of biglycan proteoglycan.

Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as toll-like receptors (TLRs) 2 and 4, present in synovial fibroblasts and macrophages can recognize cartilage degradation products (biglycan, fibronectin, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid).
Its atherogenic properties are further supported by adverse effects on the arterial wall including enhanced LDL binding to biglycan [29] and proinflammatory effects via nuclear factor kB-mediated VCAM-1 expression and monocyte adhesion [30].

In addition, (S)-[6]-Gingerol is proposed as an anti-atherosclerotic agent due to its ability to inhibit biglycan synthesis, which is an early mediator of lipid binding in atherosclerosis (Kamato et al.
The ground substance contains glycosaminoglycans like dermatan sulphate and hyaluronic acid, the proteoglycans like decorin and biglycan. The decorin-collagen interaction is responsible for orderly arrangement of the bundles of collagen.
(2) The cartilage tissue of the patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis include biglycan fragments obtained due to breakdown of proteoglycans by ADAMTSs.
Asporin is a member of the sub family of small leucine-rich proteoglycans that also includes decorin and biglycan. The asporin gene contains a triplet repeat within exon 2, coding for a polymorphic stretch of aspartic acid (D) residues in the N-terminal region of the protein.
