azelaic acid

[az″ĕ-la´ik]

a dicarboxylic acid occurring in whole grains and animal products; it has antibacterial effects on both aerobic and anaerobic organisms, particularly Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, normalizes keratinization, and has a cytotoxic effect on malignant or hyperactive melanocytes; applied topically in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

azelaic acid

A substance first identified in rancid oleic acid which interferes with anerobic glycolysis and mitochondrial activity. Azelaic acid has antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, possibly by inhibiting microbial protein synthesis.

Dermatology
AZELEX Cream is indicated for the topical treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris; another formulation, Finacea, is a topical gel used to manage inflammatory papules and pustules of mild to moderate rosacea.
