Autopolyploidy is well documented in just three carices (Tanaka, 1949).
The purpose of this study is, first, to characterize the different complexes within the group of yellow-flowered species, especially the hitherto unknown complex in North Africa, and, second, to discuss the geographical variation of this low ploidy level group (2n = 2x) in relation to the cytological variation by autopolyploidy or allopolyploidy that is very widespread in section Polium.
