Peripheral smear showed elliptocytes which were more than 50%, there was marked
anisocytosis, poikilocytosis and red cell fragmentation (fig-1a).
(5,7,8) An elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) means that there is
anisocytosis, or varying cell diameters in the RBC population.
Her blood film demonstrated mild-moderate
anisocytosis and occasional target cells but no abnormal white cell or platelet morphology.
The peripheral blood smear showed pancytopenia with RBCs
anisocytosis, occasional schistocytes, and no blasts.
There was marked anisokaryosis and
anisocytosis. Binucleated and multinucleated cells as well as karyomegaly were multifocally observed.
Investigations revealed a hemoglobin =9.2g/dl, White cell count =5000/cmm (neutrophils=20%, lymphocytes=70%, monocytes=08%, eosinophils=02%), platelet count = 206,000/cmm, hematocrit =30.2, mean corpuscular volume =87.3fL,
anisocytosis, polychromasia and a reticulocyte count =2%.
On morphology, platelets are increased in counts, with platelet
anisocytosis (large platelets).
A peripheral blood smear showed
anisocytosis, and target cell and reticulocyte was 3.5% (normal range: 1-1.5%).
Previously various morphological alterations such as hypochromia, polychromia, stomatocyte,
anisocytosis and poikilocytosis in experimentally infected rats and in naturally occurring cases of trypanosomiasis in camels have been reported (Abd El-Baky and Salem, 2011).
Evaluation of RDW-CV, RDW-SD, and MATH-1SD for the detection of erythrocyte
anisocytosis observed by optical microscopy.
