There are several antimalarials targeting the blood forms of P vivax, such as chloroquine, amodiaquine, artesunate, artemether, lumefantrine, dihydroartemisinin, piperaquine, chloroquine remains the most widely used as first-line treatment for this species (2,7).
falciparum malaria cases are artemether-lumefantrine (AM-LF), artesunatemefloquine (AS-MQ), artesunate-sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (AS-SP), dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, and artesunate amodiaquine (2).
Sanofi added that more than 1.7m treatments of its ArteSunate AmodiaQuine Winthrop (ASAQ Winthrop, which is a fixed dose artemisinin-based combination therapy) is being manufactured with semisynthetic artesunate in Morocco and are being shipped from its distribution centre to Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo, Liberia, Niger and Nigeria.
Artemisinin with an endoperoxide sesquiterpene lactone structure is unlike those of any other known antimalarials (mefloquine, amodiaquine, and chloroquine) that kills all stages of the parasite by a reductive interaction with free heme, resulting in generation of some types of free radicals that could alkylate parasite proteins and damage membranes [8].
