adiposogenital dystrophy

 [ad″ĭ-po-so-jen´ĭ-t'l dis´trah-fe]

increased body fat (obesity) accompanied by underdevelopment of the genitalia and altered secondary sex characteristics, caused by damage to certain parts of the hypothalamus, with a decrease in the secretion of gonadotropic hormones from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Treatment depends on the primary cause of the condition, usually a tumor or infection involving the hypothalamus. Called also adiposogenital syndrome and Fröhlich's syndrome.

ad·i·po·so·gen·i·tal dys·tro·phy

a disorder characterized primarily by obesity and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism in adolescent boys; dwarfism is rare, and when present is thought to reflect hypothyroidism. Vision loss, behavioral abnormalities, and diabetes insipidus may occur. Fröhlich syndrome is a common synonym for this disorder. Although the original case involved a pituitary tumor, most cases are thought to result from hypothalamic dysfunction in areas regulating appetite and gonadal development. The most common causes are pituitary and hypothalamic neoplasms.
