Steels in sliding contact in a vacuum, for instance, lose oxides and experience rapid
adhesive wear. The same materials sliding in a good lubricant have oxides replenished and wear more slowly.
Even when the strength of the flights is ignored, it would take a radial force in excess of 155,000 lb to bend the screw over the distance shown as the "wear area." In this case, the pressure simply forced the screw flights into the barrel with such force that
adhesive wear developed, tearing the metal alloys off both surfaces.
(4) did comprehensive research on the tribological properties of glass fibers, carbon fibers, and their fabrics-reinforced PEI composites under various wear conditions, such as
adhesive wear, abrasive wear, erosive wear, etc.
Therefore it can be concluded that the wear mechanisms of POM-Cu composites are mainly
adhesive wear and abrasive wear.
Thereafter, the wear was continued by the
adhesive wear between the bulk sample and the transfer film coated on metallic counterpart.
The smaller, flake-like debris indicated
adhesive wear, as the plastically deformed surface of the sample adhered to the counterface material.
For this reason, we concentrated on the
adhesive wear of these materials.
Probably, it will soften some of PI molecular chains and aggravate
adhesive wear. This can also be verified by Zhang's research work that softening effect could facilitate the wear process [18], In turn, the wear rate resulted from
adhesive wear and fracture would be highly consistent with the value shown in Fig.
As can be seen, in lower temperatures of tempering, the wear mechanism is a combination of abrasive and
adhesive wear. With an increase in the tempering temperature, abrasive wear mechanism was changed to the dominating adhesive mechanism which is justifiable according to the softening in the structure and the reduction in the hardness.
Adhesive wear: This type of wear occurs when asperities of articulating materials fuse together, under the influence of pressure, and rupture subsequently due to relative motion leading to transfer of small material from one surface to other surface, as shown in Fig.
A limitation to their performance has been that they don't perform well in tribological applications involving moving metal parts, where
adhesive wear and galling tend to lead to rapid wear or failure.
