A gene on chromosome 19p13.2 that encodes a medium chain of the heterotetrameric, trans-Golgi, clathrin-associated adaptor-related protein complex AP-1, which is located at the Golgi vesicle and links clathrin to receptors in coated vesicles. The vesicles are involved in endocytosis and Golgi processing; the AP complexes recruit clathrin to membranes and recognise sorting signals within the cytosolic tails of transmembrane cargo molecules.
