AIM2 inflammasome complex

A multiprotein cytoplasmic complex that consists of caspase-1, ASC, and AIM2 (a member of the HN-200 protein family that is the sensor of cytosolic double-stranded DNA). Like other inflammasomes, caspase activation leads to processing and secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines—e.g., IL-1 beta, IL-18, and IL-33. The AIM2 inflammasome is essential for host defence against cytosolic bacteria and DNA viruses.
