A screening tool for diagnosing adrenocortical dysfunction. If 17-KSs are increased, individual steroids are then analysed by the more costly fraction procedure.

Ref range
• 0–11 years, 0.1–3.0 mg/24 hours;
• 11–14 years, 2–7 mg/24 hours;
• Males 6–21 mg/24 hours.
 
Increased in
Adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal cancer, adenoma, adrenogenital syndrome.

Decreased in
Addison’s disease, panhypopituitarism, eunuchoidism.
 
Specimen
24-hour urine with HCl preservative.
