zonula adherens Etymology: L, zone, belt, adhaerere, to stick a continuous zone running around the outer surface of a cell in which there is an intercellular space of about 15 to 20 nm width. A component of the junctional complex between cells, the zone contains dense filamentous material. zonula pl. zonulae [L.] zonule. zonula adherens common component of junctional complexes between epithelial cells; forms an effective barrier between the lumen and connective tissue. Called also tight junction. zonula ciliaris suspensory ligament of the lens. zonula occludens part of the junctional complex of columnar epithelium. How to thank TFD for its existence?
