xanthine oxidase /xan·thine ox·i·dase/ (ok´si-das) a flavoprotein enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid, the final steps in the degradation of purines; deficiency, an autosomal recessive trait, causes xanthinuria.
