Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.02 sec.
working dogs
breeds or individuals that are bred for or trained to do specific tasks that help humans in some way, such as guide dogs for the blind, sledge or cart dogs, police or guard dogs, and livestock tending dogs. In some dog classification systems used for competition, this group includes only those breeds that work livestock, e.g. Collie, Australian cattle dog, Australian kelpie, German Shepherd dog, Shetland sheepdog, Old English sheepdog, Hungarian puli and Welsh corgi, while other 'working dog' breeds, such as the Rottweiler and St. Bernard, are utility dogs.
