white spot syndrome
a baculovirus complex with probably three baculoviruses involved; clinical signs include a loose cuticle with white or reddish-brown spots; 100% mortality in 3-10 days not uncommon in Penaeus monodon, P. japonicus, P. chinensis, P. indicus, P. merguiensis, P. setiferus.

Disease outbreaks in shrimp farms, especially white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), have cost Indian shrimp farms four to five billion rupees a year.
A subtracted cDNA library was prepared using RNA from specific pathogen-free (SPF) Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles (~1 g) collected before (0) and after (48 h) inoculation with the China isolate of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV).
Since its first appearance in shrimp culture facilities in Taiwan in the early 1990s, white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) has spread around the globe.
